Rhino in Nepal

Nepal is home to several species of wildlife, including the majestic one-horned rhinoceros. Also known as the Indian rhinoceros, this species is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to poaching and habitat loss.

Rhino Habitat The one-horned rhinoceros can be found in the Terai region of Nepal, a subtropical lowland area along the southern border. The rhinos prefer tall grasslands and forests near water sources. Chitwan National Park and Bardia National Park are important habitats.

Rhino Population In the 1950s, the rhino population had declined to just a few dozen individuals. Thanks to conservation efforts, there are now around 645 one-horned rhinoceros in Nepal, with the majority in Chitwan National Park.

Conservation Efforts Nepal established Chitwan National Park in the 1960s (UNESCO World Heritage Site 1984). The park employs anti-poaching units. The WWF has been involved since the 1960s. The National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), established 1982, runs community-based conservation programs.
